Is the Price Right? Setting Prices That Don’t Make You Feel Guilty

Is the Price Right? Setting Prices That Don’t Make You Feel Guilty

How to know what price to charge when you don’t want to be a part of the capitalist machine, but still have to pay the rent.

I keep running into two conundrums as an artist who also runs my own business.

Conundrum 1:

To make ends meet, I need to charge more than most people can afford. But I want everyone to be able to afford what I’m offering, especially people without lots of money. It feels impossible to find a fair price.

Conundrum 2:

I’ve poured my heart, soul, guts, and time into creating a priceless, magical thing, that only I can create. How on earth can I possibly equate this with any amount of money? It feels impossible to find a fair price.

Okay, so maybe those are actually the same conundrum.

What’s a fair price for what I’m offering? This is the conundrum of living in a system that glorifies money above all. Isn’t it strange that we find ourselves having to put a price on what we love the most? On the weird, one-of-a-kind things that only we can do?
